The 2017 BET Awards announced their list of nominations for the ceremony scheduled for June 25, including Best African Act. The nominees were WizKid, Tekno, Mr. Eazi, Davido, Stonebwoy, AKA, Babes Wodumo and Nasty C. Nigeria is most represented this year, with four representatives (WizKid, Tekno, Mr. Eazi, Davido). Three nominees hail from South Africa, while Stonebwoy is the lone representative for Ghana. This category is stacked with past winners; WizKid was a co-winner with Ghanaian performer Sarkodie in 2012, while Davido won the award in 2014 and Stonebwoy won it in 2015. Davido referenced his past win in an Instagram post celebrating the nomination. 2016’s winner Black Coffee, South African DJ, was not nominated this year.
WizKid is the most internationally known of the artists and is a frontrunner to earn his second win in the category. He’s helped strongly by his appearance on “One Dance”, a number one hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Official Charts, performed by Canadian rapper Drake. Drake returned the favor two months ago by appearing on WizKid’s “Come Closer”, which became his first ever single as the lead credited artist to chart in the United Kingdom. Mr. Eazi is also in the running after releasing his Accra to Lagos mixtape in Februrary, which reached the number four spot in the Billboard World Albums chart. Nasty C, whose “Hell Naw” won Song of the Year in this year’s Metro FM Music Awards held in South Africa, is another candidate. Babes Wodumo is a dark horse, being the only female nominated this year in the category. She released her debut album Gqom Queen, Vol. 1 in 2016 to critical acclaim in South Africa.
The BET Awards are held annually in the United States as a celebration of African-American culture, and covers music, film and sports.
