How Will Tanzania’s Newest Music Streaming Service Fair In Such A Competitive Market?

Ally Makongo has developed Tanzania’s newest East African music and high-definition video streaming mobile application, Chizika, available on the Tigo, Airtel, Zantel, Vodacom and MTN networks. But how does Chizika fair against other streaming platforms in Africa’s growing digital music industry, such as Mziiki, Mkito and Kenya’s Mdundo.

Well in addition to video streaming, Makongo’s Chizika has multiple features that make it competitive. Unlike other applications, users can use Chizika immediately after downloading it without creating a username for just 1000 Tanzanian Shillings (US$0.45). The app then opens up to a truly full service music platform that allows downloading content directly and sharing music with friends, while also having access to upcoming music events, updates on favorite artists, and notifications on exclusive material.

At first glance, Makongo’s Chizika does sound promising in the battle for streaming market territory against other developers within the continent, but foreign influence could prove to be a bigger challenge with Apple Music’s entry into the African market in June of last year.
