In preparation for the upcoming Star Sixes Tournament in London, Austin “Jay Jay” Okocha got into a ball juggling challenge with fellow Nigerian star footballer Nwankwo Kanu. They were guests at the 2017 Copa Coca Cola, where the team from Osun defeated the squad from Imo State in the National Final on June 23rd. The challenge was hosted by local comedian Laf Up, and both Okocha and Kanu entertained spectators with skills and ball balancing. Okocha was deemed the winner of the fun sidebar to an important event in Nigeria, the one he would last attend before beginning to get ready for playing in the Star Sixes Tournament.

Okocha joins other former Nigeria greats in the Star Sixes Tournament. Okocha will represent his country alongside Daniel Amokachi, Victor Ikpeba, Garba Lawal and Celestine Babayaro, some of the top players from the squad called “The Golden Generation” from the mid 1990s. The competition, scheduled to take place from July 13th to July 16th, has Nigeria initially scheduled to play against Brazil and Italy. This tournament, which will take place at London’s O2 Arena, involves 12 international squads facing off in a six-man competition. In addition to the previously mentioned countries, England, Germany, Spain, France, Portugal, Mexico, Scotland, Denmark and China are also expected to be represented in the contest. Some of the legends that have been recruited to this tournament include Steven Gerrard, Rivaldo, Alessandro Del Piero and Robert Pires.

Okocha has risen in visibility thanks to this tournament, and is still held up by Nigerians as one of the country’s greatest successes. For example, Taiwo Ogunjobi, former Secretary of the Nigerian Football Federation, called Kanu and Okocha the greatest players Nigeria has ever produced. He said this when asked about the future of Nigerian football, lamenting that the country currently does not have that caliber of player, but expressing hope that prospects can be developed to reach that level of play.
