Nigeria Professional Football League roundup for June 8

Plateau United and Ifeanyi Ubah remain atop standings

In the Nigeria Professional Football League, the Lobi Stars downed MFM FC 3-1 on the back of an impressive hat trick by Anthony Okpotu, with the first coming in the 28th minute off of an excellent free kick. MFM was able to get a goal just before the end of the first half courtesy of Austin Ogunye, but Okpotu put them away with the rest of his goals in the second half. Lobi Stars moves up to fifth place in the league standings.

Elsewhere, Plateau United got a 2-1 victory over Sunshine Stars, with both of their goals scored by Emmanuel Odafe. Sunshine Stars actually scored the first goal of the match off the foot of Ezekiel Thompson, but Odafe got Plateau United a much needed comeback, helping the club to maintain their top spot in the league. Meanwhile, Sunshine Stars is inching closer to relegation, falling to the fourth-to-last position in the standings. FC Ifeanyi Ubah was also able to solidify their position in moving up to the CAF Champions League with a 2-0 win over ABS FC, thanks to Yaya Kone and Seka Pascal. Ifeanyi Ubah remains in second place in the standings

In the match between Gombe United and Enyimba FC, it was Enyimba’s Ikechukwu Ibenegbu who scored first, thanks to some great footwork and a well-timed pass by Mustapha Ibrahim. But Gombe United struck back with a Suleiman Usman boot in the 81st minute, getting the game to finish as a 1-1 draw. This is especially damaging for Gombe, as they find themselves in the third-to-last position and on the brink of relegation. Shooting Stars also managed only a draw despite being second-to-last in the league. They exercised their defense, keeping Kano Pillars scoreless, but they couldn’t get any offense to take advantage of the nil ending.
